Building on a foundation of AI research

In addition to our heritage of innovation, Edinburgh is the UK’s only ‘AI Leader’ city – according to a recent report by Deloitte. Edinburgh is also positioning itself as a leading European hub for data and AI.

The city will host the UK's next national supercomputer, backed by up to £750 million of investment, further strengthening Scotland's position in advanced computing and AI innovation. What’s more, the University of Edinburgh, an AI pioneer since the 1960s, is home to a world-leading AI lab – building on its history of world-leading speech and language processing.

To add to this, Scotland is home to four new UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) centres at the universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt.

A hub for AI

Scotland is home to an estimated 296 AI-focused companies and more than 11,200 digital technology businesses. Scotland accounted for almost one-fifth of UK university spin-out equity deals, reflecting the strength of its commercialisation ecosystem. Supported by the £661 million Data-Driven Innovation programme, Scotland is connecting industry, research and government to accelerate AI adoption, innovation and talent development.

As an investor, you'll have opportunities to develop and deploy AI solutions across some of Scotland's most important growth sectors, including: financial services, healthcare and life sciences, energy transition, advanced manufacturing and robotics, and creative industries.

Scotland's innovation ecosystem, including the AI Accelerator at the Bayes Centre and the Data Lab, supports the creation and scaling of high-growth AI ventures.

Highly skilled talent

Tap into Scotland's AI talent pipeline, including 500+ PhD students and more than 14,000 graduates annually across computing, engineering and mathematical sciences.

Thanks to Scotland’s small size and the proximity of its largest cities, you’ll benefit from a collaborative culture. On top of that, we’ve got cutting-edge facilities and a supportive infrastructure, which is supported by centres of excellence, including Techscaleropens in a new window, The National Robotariumopens in a new window and CENSISopens in a new window.

There are strong links between academia and industry, meaning graduates are equipped with practical and cutting-edge skills.

Our cities

Edinburgh offers access to six UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training, which is more than any other UK institution.
