Hunterston Marine Yard is a 90-acre, shovel-ready development site with unparalleled capacity to support the construction, assembly, and deployment of offshore wind farms in Scottish waters, the Irish Sea, and the Celtic Sea.
With its scale, deep-water access, and strategic location on the Clyde, Hunterston is perfectly positioned to service renewable energy projects ranging in value from hundreds of millions, to billions of pounds. It could also help boost long-term skilled employment and investment in local supply chains in an area of significant economic need.
Finer details
Hunterston Marine Yard has played a historic role in the UK’s energy and industrial sector, from the manufacture of North Sea oil infrastructure to coal and ore importation. Today, it is undergoing a transformation that mirrors the UK’s wider transition from carbon-based energy to clean, renewable power.
The site boasts a strategic location at the heart of 7.5 gigawatts of planned offshore wind projects off Scotland's coast and in the Irish Sea. This, along with its scale and certifications create an unmatched value proposition for offshore wind developers seeking a reliable, well-connected, and future-proof construction and marshalling facility.
The project presents the opportunity to service wind farms with capital values ranging from hundreds of millions, to billions of pounds. It's currently seeking between £75 million and £150 million in investment.
The project has full consent and is ready to begin construction.
Detailed planning permission and all marine consents have been secured for the creation of a new heavy lift at the quayside and the associated offshore wind facility. All procurement processes have been completed, and the project can mobilise quickly.
Hunterston is genuinely shovel-ready, offering the offshore wind industry immediate capability in a market where timing is critical.
The yard is owned freehold by Peel Ports Group and the Crown Estate Scotland. Both organisations are aligned and supportive of the project.
The yard features exemplary infrastructure, space, and conditions to support offshore wind developments and associated industries. It offers:
Excellent deep-water access and stable marine conditions
Ample manoeuvring space for large offshore wind vessels
Significant power capacity, with 5.9 megavolt-amperes (MVA) being delivered through a new 11 megavolt-ampere (MVA) substation currently under construction by Peel Ports Group
The site forms a core element of Hunterston PARC, Peel Ports Group’s flagship 1000-acre regeneration project, which is rapidly evolving into one of the UK’s leading hubs for the green and blue economies.
The marine yard will serve as a catalyst for wider inward investment in the PARC estate, driving growth of a local, resilient supply chain.
As well as offshore wind, the PARC is developing ventures in grid stabilisation, long-duration energy storage, subsea cable manufacturing, and sustainable aquaculture.
In total, this represents £3.5 billion of inward investment and establishes Hunterston as a nationally significant industrial cluster.
Partners
Peel Ports Group is the UK’s second largest port operator, with seven major ports and 24 terminals across the UK and Ireland, including Clydeport, Inchgreen, and Greenock in Scotland.
The group:
Handles 70 million tonnes of cargo each year
Employs more than 2000 people
Is firmly commited to achieve net zero in its operations by 2040
Has a proven track record in offshore wind through its operations at Clydeport and Great Yarmouth
Hunterston PARC is one of the group’s most ambitious regeneration projects, repurposing a former coal and iron terminal into a world-leading hub for clean energy and the blue economy.
As co-owner of the yard, the Crown Estate Scotland is fully aligned and supportive of the redevelopment vision for the site and its long-term strategic role.
