Digital technology and data

Facilities include the Bayes Centre, Quantum Software Lab, Virtualised Security Operations Centre, Photonics and Quantum Accelerator, and National Robotarium. The region’s Data-Driven Innovation Hubs and CodeBase, the UK’s largest tech incubator, foster collaboration between academia and industry, making it the ideal location for data-driven businesses to thrive and scale.

Energy transition

Edinburgh and South East Scotland will enable your business to forge ahead in energy transition sectors. Key assets include the former Cockenzie Power Station site, Port of Leith Renewables Hub, and Fife Renewables Innovation Centre. Energy Park Fife hosts the pioneering H100 project. This world-first trial will demonstrate the practicality of delivering 100% green hydrogen to homes for heating.

The Energy Training Academy and Arrol Gibb Innovation Campus support skills development and advanced manufacturing. These facilities, along with the Forth Green Freeport, position the region as a leader in renewable energy and net zero innovation.

Life sciences

Food and drink

The region is home to the Scottish Centre for Food Development and Innovation and the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling.

New investment is creating a new innovation park to accelerate sector collaboration across enterprises in life sciences, food and drink and technology.

Similarly, the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security will support decision making to transform agri-food systems and food security through research between local and global partners.

The region's Smart Data Foundry aims to help businesses, universities, public bodies and charities share data securely. This help partners collaborate on projects to improve the lives of billions of people around the world, while keeping individuals’ data safe and protecting their privacy.

Likewise, the Blockpass Identity Lab of Edinburgh Napier University is a research laboratory that uses blockchain technology to protect consumers’ personal data.

The Blockchain Technology Laboratory studies all aspects of distributed ledger technology. The lab provides a direct connection between developers and researchers. This helps to get projects live faster, and pursues outreach projects with entrepreneurs in Edinburgh’s vibrant technology community.
