2016 was a record year for FDI in Scotland - and a new report shows that our support is a key attraction for investors.
There are many reasons why global companies choose Scotland as a leading destination for inward investment projects.
Our talented people, a commitment to invention and innovation that has lasted centuries and easy access to global markets are just some of the factors that make companies choose Scotland.
And a new independent survey has highlighted another crucial reason that companies invest in Scotland - the support offered by Scottish Development International and our partners.
The survey, carried out by economic consultants SQW, found that:
- Almost 50% of inward investment projects would not have happened without our support
- 30% of inward investment projects happened faster thanks to our support - commonly by up to two years
- Around 25% of inward investment projects would have been smaller without our support
What our support means for FDI projects
The survey found that inward investors to Scotland identified that our support produced a number of key outcomes:
- Creating and sustaining jobs
- Enabling new investment including in buildings and machinery
- Increasing training available to employees
- Attracting new innovations and increasing R&D projects in Scotland
In the five years to 2016 our support helped inward investors create 10,400 jobs, with a further 6300 created in the supply chain and wider economy.
Of the 370 inward investors surveyed by SQW, 138 were first time investors in Scotland.

"Scotland's attractions are still shining out brightly in an uncertain world."
"Scotland can justifiably claim to be established as second only to London in terms UK FDI. Again, this bodes well for the future flow of FDI into Scotland."
And Scotland continues to attract investment from all over the world, including:
- United States (35% of FDI projects)
- France (14%)
- Germany (6%)

Established inward investors echo those sentiments with Scott Stewart, head of Scotland for Barclays, saying:
"Fundamental to our strategy is support from and accessibility to the Scottish Government and key business support agencies."
