The University of Strathclyde’s newly opened £89 million Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) will redefine the way Scottish Higher Education works with the global renewables industry.
The TIC is at the heart of Glasgow’s International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone (ITREZ).
The nine-floor, 25,000 sq m TIC will bring together up to 850 academics, working alongside industry partners and companies based nearby in the inovo building, to help boost innovation, and investment in Scotland’s renewable energy sector.
It provides the perfect collaboration and innovation location for both domestic and international companies.
The power to succeed
Boasting 25% of Europe’s offshore wind and tidal resources, and 10% of its wave resource, Scotland is the natural home for the renewables companies to make their ideas happen.
Major renewables names are here, whilst no other place on earth has had more wave and tidal devices built, deployed and tested, using world class R&D facilities.
Over £200 million in public financial support has been made available to help achieve Scotland’s target of 100% electricity consumption generated from renewable energy by 2020.
With academia, graduates, laboratories, research areas, conferencing facilities, meeting spaces, collaboration areas and a sustainable workplace environment - the underlying benefits of locating to ITREZ are obvious.
Together, the TIC and Inovo, form the physical hub of the ITREZ project.
The TIC will harness the University’s strengths in engineering, science, business, humanities and the social sciences, in order to develop new technologies for the renewable energy sector.
The TIC will focus on:
- Low cost, greener power and energy
- Renewable technologies
- Photonics and sensors
- Advanced engineering
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing
Developed with industry, for industry, the TIC has already attracted industry partners including SSE, the Weir Group, Iberdrola and several other major cross-sectorial industrial companies. By working together, all will benefit from participation by large corporations and a large group of innovative SMEs.
The new TIC building is already doing its bit to help cut carbon emissions, using 50% less heating energy than Scottish building regulation requirements.
An alliance of the public and private sectors with academia, ITREZ will establish Glasgow as an internationally recognised location for research, development, design and engineering of renewables and a range of associated enabling technologies. ITREZ is expected to generate 700 new jobs and attract valuable investment to Glasgow.
Scottish Enterprise’s award-winning inovo building is already 53% occupied and recently introduced new, smaller office suites.
Being part of ITREZ means that your company can work alongside a growing number of key industry, innovation, supply chain and manufacturing partners, providing opportunities to network with industry partners, academia and public sector, as well as engage in collaborative projects, and share knowledge and best practice.
Companies already collaborating within ITREZ and inovo include:
- SSE Centre of Excellence
- ScottishPower Renewables
- Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (inovo)
- University of Strathclyde Technology & Innovation Centre (inovo)
- LinkNode (inovo)
- SgurrControl (inovo)
- Energy Technology Partnership
- CENSIS (inovo)
- LeanIP (inovo)
- Spartan Energy (inovo)
To help feed and engender the ethos of co-location, collaborate and innovation, tenants of inovo can access a range of shared spaces, from conference suites and cafes, to landscaped, outdoor public realm areas.
