Floating offshore wind in Scotland

We’re helping to pioneer the next generation of offshore wind

Home to the world's first floating offshore wind farm

We’re a world leading location for the test and demonstration of offshore renewable technologies

Ten years on from completion of the world’s first deep water wind farm, Beatrice Demonstrator, Scotland is about to become host to yet another world first in offshore renewable energy: Hywind Scotland — the world’s first floating offshore wind farm.

As a nation with an enviable track record in pioneering offshore renewables, Scotland was the ideal choice for Statoil to build their innovative floating offshore wind array, following on from other ground breaking Scottish projects like:

  • The Hunterston Test Centre for offshore turbines – the UK’s first onshore test site for offshore wind turbines
  • The Levenmouth Turbine – the world’s most advanced, open access, offshore wind turbine
  • EMEC – The world’s first purpose-build, grid connected, open sea test facility for wave and tidal energy devices
  • MeyGen – The world's first MW scale tidal energy array

Scottish companies have developed a breadth of expertise through their participation in these demonstrators and/or their involvement in the commercial-scale offshore wind farms being build around the UK and Europe.

Many of our supply chain companies have decades of experience of working in the harsh North Sea environment, and are playing a leading role in adapting technologies and techniques from offshore oil & gas for use in offshore renewables.

And with some of the best offshore renewable resources in Europe — including an estimated 25% of Europe's total offshore wind generation potential — Scotland is well placed to host the commercial-scale floating offshore wind farms of the future.

Investing in Scotland has many advantages, including competitive tax rates, skilled workers, financial assistance, a mature network of energy ports along our coast and a policy commitment to increasing the use of renewable energy.

Here's your quick guide to Scotland's strengths in offshore renewables and the companies that are helping us to build competitive advantage in the sector.

If you've got any questions about how we can support your offshore renewables project.
