Marine energy in Scotland

25% of Europe's tidal energy resource

And 10% of Europe's wave energy resource.

With 12,000km of coastline and over 790 islands, it's little wonder that Scotland has an affinity with the sea.

Today that affinity offers huge opportunities in renewable energy - with our total marine energy resource estimated at 33GW.

With a commitment to innovation, decades of offshore energy experience and a supportive business environment, Scotland is the natural home for your marine energy investment.

Over ten years of marine energy experience

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney is the first and only of its kind.

With 14 full-scale, grid-connected test berths, EMEC provides developers of wave and tidal converters with purpose-built, accredited open-sea testing facilities.

The site also offers independently-verified performance assessments and a wide range of consultancy and research services.

Committed to marine energy innovation

By basing your marine energy project in Scotland you'll benefit from dedicated R&D support.

Scotland's world-class universities have a global reputation for innovation.

Today they are using their experience and expertise to develop new marine energy technology. The Energy Technology Partnership supports a united academic community, dedicated to forging close links with industry.

And we've got decades of experience in coming up with innovative solutions to the technical challenges faced by our North Sea oil and gas industry.

A 'game-changer' for Scotland

MeyGen’s tidal energy project in the Pentland Firth is Europe's largest tidal power project and the world's first commercially funded tidal array.

Together with our partner organisations, we've been supporting MeyGen's work in Scotland since 2006.

Eventually two hundred and sixty nine turbines will be installed on the MeyGen project site, producing 398MW – enough to power 175,000 homes and support more than 100 jobs.

By joining MeyGen in Scotland your project will be at the forefront of tidal power generation.
