Sub sectors
Scotland 's textiles industry is led by powerful fashion, interior and technical sectors.
Fashion
Scottish companies like Johnstons, Pringle and Hawick Cashmere lead the way in the niche, luxury markets, supplying many of the world’s leading brands and couture houses.
Thanks to this reputation, experts predict a new era of growth for Scottish companies with consumers and connoisseurs that increasingly demand materials from Scottish expertise, experience and heritage.
Interior textiles
The Scottish furnishing fabric sector provides a powerful source of income and employment for
Scotland with 47 companies creating an estimated turnover of £45 million and employing 500 people.
Though rich in diversity, the Scottish interior textiles sector specialises in supplying the world markets with high quality furnishing fabrics. Many apparel cloth weavers have also, in the last decade, begun to develop ranges for the furnishing markets.
Technical textiles
Worldwide, technical textiles is the most rapidly growing sector in the textiles industry. It is also a strong performer as, though only ten percent of all textiles companies are technical, it employs 25 percent of the sector and accounts for 40 percent of turnover.
Scotland is at the forefront of this rapidly developing market and offers an unrivalled range with high quality production direct from stock or to individual specification.
