Infrastructure

Scotland's strong textiles sector is built on a high level of skills in processing and manufacturing as well as established relationships with companies that serve the sector.

Textiles skill base in Scotland

One of our greatest assets is our people. Their range of knowledge and experience is what drives us forward and keeps Scottish textiles competitive. Notable strengths lie in the production of luxury fibres and innovative technical fabrics that impact sectors far beyond the textiles industry.

There are 11,300 people employed in Scotland’s textiles sector, a significant chunk of them in the Borders, Tayside and Ayrshire regions. The value of that workforce is growing. In just the last five years the proportion of high value jobs has risen from 15 to 32 percent.

Services for textile companies

The long-established textiles sector comes with an equally established supply chain that quickly allows investors to take advantage of new business channels.

Particularly strong is Scotland’s IT infrastructure that supports production and promotion of the textiles sector. It is this support that has created an in-demand technical textiles sector that is used by multiple industries including healthcare, automotive, oil and gas, marine, electronics, forestry, fishing, agriculture, geo-textiles, construction and civil engineering.
