Centres of excellence

Academic institutes in Scotland carry out such extensive optoelectronics R&D (research and development) that they secure a total of 30 percent of the UK’s optoelectronics research budget.

Some other centres of research excellence include:

  • The Alba Centre, Scottish Microelectronics Centre and Optocap – a £4 million design centre aiding the commercialisation of micro and optoelectronic research
  • Institute of Photonics – a partnership between the University of Strathclyde, industry and Government, aiming to bridge the gap between academia and industry in photonics research and development
  • Thin Film Centre – a centre of excellence for the development of thin film innovation and technology. Work carried out relates to deposition processes, the design, fabrication and characterisation of products, and the dissemination of information about thin film applications
  • EPI Centre – based at the University of Abertay, this institute promotes interdisciplinary research, training and services in human-technology interaction for displays and communication
  • The Optoelectronics Group at the University of Glasgow has been conducting internationally recognised research for over 25 years, providing world class expertise in the design, fabrication and characterisation of optoelectronic devices
