Academic strengths of the intelligent transport systems sector

Scotland's universities play a key role in providing research to support the ITS sector, supported by high levels of funding. Examples of the work currently being undertaken, include:

  • Development of advanced systems for automated security engineering and signal processing being developed at the University of Edinburgh
  • Advancing non-linear signal and image processing, and the design of sensor networks at the University of Strathclyde
  • Several pioneering automotive control system projects at the University of Glasgow
  • Technological development at the transport modelling and technology cluster in the Transport Research Institute at Napier University
  • Research into vehicle accidents using human machine interfaces and displays at the University of Dundee

Also, a consortium of five Scottish universities are developing wireless sensor networks at the nano scale, which has the potential to influence the wireless sensors market of ITS.

Commercial strengths of the intelligent transport systems sector

  • Scotland’s main strengths lie within:
    • Wireless communications
    • Sensors
    • Displays
    • Intelligent CCTV and image/video technologies
    • Software development, safety and security

Underpinned by a strong telecommunications base, the Scottish ITS sector is enjoying prosperous times, supported by rapid growth in interrelated areas.

Support for the intelligent transport systems sector

The Scottish Government is an active supporter of the ITS sector, encouraging collaboration within the sector through a number of initiatives and networks in collaboration with us and with other agencies.

Sustainable Glasgow is an intiative which aims to make Glasgow one of Europe’s most sustainable cities within 10 years. In part this goal will be delivered by large scale projects and investment - but also through engaging  with citizens, communities and employers and by putting in place strong and supportive public policies.

The Proof of Concept Programme allows researchers from Scotland's universities, research institutes and NHS Boards to receive funding and support to turn their ideas into a global business.
