An overview of intelligent transport systems in Scotland

Scotland’s automotive sector mainly focuses on the production and development of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Today Scotland is a leading supplier of intelligent solutions for both traffic networks and in-car technology.

Around 200 companies make up the Scottish automotive industry base, mainly in electronics, software and high-performance engineering - 90 percent of these companies work in intelligent transport systems.

Today Scotland's ITS sector is recognised as being highly-accomplished and the industry is getting stronger, with researchers predicting that it will grow by 15 percent per annum.

What are intelligent transport systems?

The term ‘intelligent transport system’ covers a range of technology based solutions that improve the quality, safety and information aspects of traffic and transport. The technology is either added to a transport infrastructure, or to a vehicle, and tends to fall into one or all of the following three categories: communications, information and integration.
