Centres of excellence
Scotland performs exceptionally well academically and has a world-wide reputation for excellence for research and making groundbreaking discoveries.
Some electronic centres of excellence include:
Wireless Networks Consortium
Speckled Computing – Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews and Strathclyde Universities consortium
Project Leader: D.K. Arvind, Edinburgh University
Speckled computing offers a radical new concept in information technology that has the potential to revolutionise the way we communicate and exchange information.
Specks are minute semiconductor grains that can sense and compute locally and communicate wirelessly. Each speck will be autonomous, with its own captive, renewable energy source. Thousands of specks, scattered or sprayed on a person or surface, will collaborate as a programmable computational networks called Specknets.
