Red meat industry in Scotland
The Scottish red meat industry is dedicated to high quality production and in 2009, Scotland produced over 170,000 tonnes of beef, 30,000 tonnes of lamb and 45,000 tonnes of pork.
Scottish farmers have generations of livestock production expertise. Today this is combined with high welfare standards and state-of-the-art animal husbandry techniques.
As well as Scotland’s natural advantages such as wide, unspoiled grasslands and clean, unpolluted air, the country enjoys good transport links and an excellent reputation for fine quality products. Nearly 70 percent of this production is exported outside Scotland.
Scottish red meat products are known for their quality and tradition the world-over by top chefs and discerning customers alike. For example, in 2009 and 2011, Scotch beef and Scotch lamb were selected for the prestigious Bocuse d’Or competition.
As a result, Scottish meat is very much in demand – over 70 percent of the country's produce is exported.
