Scotland's wave and tidal energy centres of excellence
With 25 percent of Europe’s tidal energy and 10 percent of Europe’s wave resources Scotland is the natural home of research and development in the wave and tidal energy sector.
Our universities and long history of innovation combine with our abundant natural resources to place Scotland at the cutting edge of wave and tidal energy research.
Our wave and tidal energy centres of excellence include:
-
European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) – Based in Orkney, EMEC is the first centre of its kind in the world offering opportunities to test full-scale grid-connected devices in unrivalled wave and tidal conditions
-
Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) – An alliance of Scotland’s universities boast around 250 academics and 600 researchers, ETP is the largest, most broad based power and energy research partnership in Europe
-
Scottish European Green Energy Centre (SEGEC) - based at the University of Aberdeen, SEGEC is at the forefront of renewabale energy innovation receiving a £1.6 million grant through the European Regional Development Fund
-
Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC)
- Part of the International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone (ITREZ) in Glasgow, the TIC will house 850 academics and 500 engineers, researchers and project managers from industry. Work begins on the University of Strathclyde-based centre in early 2012
-
Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) – based at the University of Strathclyde, NAME boasts a 125 year history of marine expertise
-
University of the Highlands and Islands – committed to building energy-related research and development capacity within the Highlands and Islands
-
Institute for Energy Systems (IES) – based at the University of Edinburgh, leads the EPSRC-funded Supergen Marine Energy Consortium, a partner in SuperGen FlexNet, AMPerES and Photovoltaics consortia and provides PhD level training and an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems
-
Scottish Energy Laboratory (SEL) - Scotland's new national energy laboratory, a hub for Scotland's energy research, test and demonstration sector
