Scotland’s bioenergy centres of excellence

Scotland’s 15 universities benefit from our long tradition of innovation and culture of academic excellence.

Today many of our universities are using those skills to make Scotland a world leader developing renewable energy techniques.

Scotland’s bioenergy industry centres of excellence include:

• University of Glasgow Biochemistry and Cell Biology Department – research into the molecular details of how proteins function
• University of Dundee Division of Molecular Microbiology – conducts research into microbes and works in partnership with Scottish Crop Research Institute
• BioMara Project – a UK and Ireland joint venture, the University of Strathclyde has been researching the economic, social and technological aspects of generating biofuel from algae
• University of the Highlands and Islands Energy Research Group – involved in developing energy research and training with focus on marine and land based bioenergy and community renewable energy
• Edinburgh Napier University Biofuel Research Centre – carries out internationally recognised research on development of bio-butanol as a biofuel
• Scottish Agricultural College – an innovative, knowledge based organisation, research includes agricultural diversification and arable energy coppicing
• Scottish Crop Research Institute – bridges the gap between rural crop production and urban wellbeing with innovative solutions
• Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) - Part of the International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone (ITREZ) in Glasgow, the TIC will house 850 academics and 500 engineers, researchers and project managers from industry. Work begins on the University of Strathclyde-based centre in early 2012.
