Strathclyde University’s first Indian campus opens for business
The first overseas campus of one of Scotland's universities has opened on the outskirts of Delhi.
Strathclyde Business School has opened its first overseas campus after forging new educational links between Scotland and India with help and support from Scottish Development International (SDI).
The Greater Noida campus, which is being developed by Strathclyde's internationally renowned business school and infrastructure company SKIL, will deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA level courses.
Education Secretary Michael Russell officially launched the Greater Noida campus of Strathclyde University, near Delhi, during a wider tour of the country in November 2011.
Mr Russell said: "Scottish universities are renowned across the world for the quality of their learning, teaching and research, and Strathclyde is amongst our best.
"The fact that it will be flying the flag for Scotland at this new university campus in India can only help cement our hard-won reputation for excellence and further strengthen the links between Scottish and Indian higher education institutions."
SDI-India collaboration
SDI has two offices in India providing local support and education sector expertise to facilitate partnerships between Scottish and Indian organisations.
It’s hoped that the collaboration will be further developed in India with branch campuses in Mumbai and Chennai in the longer term.
“This new partnership in education will benefit both Scotland and India, creating research and development opportunities, encouraging the transfer of knowledge and paving the way for more co-operations in the future.
“As opportunities with India continue to grow, Scottish Development International is working hard to ensure that Indian businesses and organisations see Scotland as an innovative, forward-thinking country – one that’s easy and efficient to do business with.
“We’re committed to strengthening and building upon Scotland’s existing links with India, one of the fastest-growing economies in the world to further raise Scotland’s profile as a globally competitive country.”
– Lena Wilson, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise
More campuses in the pipeline
The Delhi campus has been a year in the planning. Its first developmental phase expects to see more than 1200 students join the School, where they’ll be taught by 40 internationally recognised staff from India and Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow.
A Masters in Management is the first course to be launched at the new campus, followed by a Bachelor in Business Studies course beginning in 2012 and the Masters beginning in 2013.
The courses are being tailored for India's business sector and have been designed combining the insights and expertise of academics from India and the UK.
It’s hoped that the collaboration will be further developed with branch campuses in Mumbai and Chennai in the longer term.
