The film and broadcast sector in Scotland

Scotland has a lengthy history in the broadcast sector: after London, the highest level of film, television and animation production in the UK takes place in Scotland.

There are currently over 100 production companies, 300 facilities operators and about 15,000 people employed in the industry in Scotland, with a central hub of expertise activity in and around the Digital Media Quarter in Glasgow.

Three major national broadcasters are based around this area: BBC, Scottish Media Group (STV) and Channel 4.

Scotland’s smaller production companies have a history of attracting major global film and TV companies, including Warner Brothers, Fox, The History Channel, Zentropa, Discovery and National Geographic.

Digital technology continues to have a major effect on the nation’s viewing habits, which in turn affects the shape and health of the industry. Simultaneously, major technological advances are affecting all levels of production and creating opportunities at all levels of the industry.

With its notoriety in film, television and animation production, Scotland is well positioned to take advantage of this reshaped landscape.
