"Scotland is a good place to be based."
NGenTec is a spinout company from the University of Edinburgh's School Engineering. NGenTec aims to become the market leader in the supply of direct drive permanent magnet generators.
NGenTec's potential has been underlined with investment from Dutch company SET Venture Partners, the Scottish Co-investment Fund and the Department of Energy and Climate Change's Environmental Transformation fund.
NGenTec has developed a new type of generator for the wind, wave and tidal power industry which removes the need for a gearbox, making it easier to build and maintain. The technology was developed with Proof of Concept funding from Scottish Enterprise.
Dr Derek Douglas, one of NGenTec's founders, said:
“The new funds will help us develop a 1MW machine capable of running at the speed of a 6MW machine. We want to develop, manufacture and build a 1 MW modular unit over the next 12 months, specifically designed to form part of a 6MW generator we plan to manufacture and test the following year.
“We believe this generator has such advantages that we could be a major player in the world generator market with respect to wind.
“The last company I span out from a University, I grew from nothing to 550 employees in three-and-a-half years – and this has that sort of potential.
“Scotland is a good place to be based. There will be a $70billion market for offshore wind in the UK over the next 10 years, some of that just off the Forth, so Scotland is a good place to be building generators.
“We expect to be able to find the expertise to recruit in Scotland too, and have a very good relationship with SDI, which has introduced us to very useful people and potential customers.”
