European Marine Energy Centre
EMEC has an international role to play
EMEC leads the development of sea-based renewable technologies that generate electricity for homes and businesses through the energy created by waves and tidal streams.
The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is at the forefront of harnessing the power of Scotland's wave and tidal streams.
EMEC was created with investment of £15 million and aims to develop new marine energy technology for the marketplace.
The centre offers open sea test facilities, converters connected to the National Grid and the ability to test technologies in a variety of weather and sea conditions.
A world first was achieved when a deep water marine energy converter generated electricity for the National Grid from EMEC’s wave test site at Stromness. A second test site, for tidal devices, is currently under construction off the island of Eday.
The centre is leading the way on the development of standards, and has launched the first performance assessment for Wave Energy Converter systems in open-sea test facilities.
The centre is the first of its kind in the world to receive United Kingson Accreditation Service (UKAS) accreditation as a testing laboratory for wave energy converters, reinforcing Scotland’s position as an international centre of excellence in the development of marine energy.
