High flying Edinburgh Airport sets new records

Date Created: 12 August 2011

Edinburgh Airport recorded its busiest month in over sixty year of civilian flights in July and came close to breaking the one million passenger barrier.

A rise of 3.3 percent saw 992,500 passengers pass through the airport to continue a record breaking trend after the terminal saw its busiest ever March, April and June this year. 36,000 passengers travelled on July 16th, the busiest day of the month.

With almost 9.2 million passengers in the past 12 months Edinburgh, Scotland's busiest airport, has enjoyed annual growth of 5.7 percent. The 5.4 million passengers in the first seven months of 2011 equal a 12 percent rise on the same period in 2010.

A 45.7 percent increase in traffic on scheduled European flights saw Glasgow enjoy overall growth of 0.5 percent and reverse a six year slide in passenger numbers.

Aberdeen saw an increase in both domestic and international traffic for a rise of almost nine percent. Aberdeen also joined Heathrow as the only UK airports to record increases in air transport traffic.

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen are Scotland's three main airports. All three are owned by BAA which operates six airports across the UK.
