The United Arab Emirates provides a regional hub for Scottish companies seeking to do business in the Middle East, particularly in the Gulf States.
With direct aviation links to Dubai from Scotland, numerous Scottish businesses have already begun to establish a presence in the area. The UAE is one of Britain’s key trading partners, and provides a gateway to the wider Middle East and North Africa region.
- In 2010, the UAE was Britain’s largest export market in the MENA region
- In 2010, UK exports to the UAE were £3.9 billion
- The UK is one of Qatar’s key trading partners
- The UK exported goods worth £778 million to Qatar in 2009. Exports included industrial machinery and equipment, electrical machinery, vehicles and power generation equipment
- The value of the UK’s invisible exports such as legal, financial and consultancy services was estimated at £484 million in 2009
- Qatar is also a growing market of interest with particular strengths in gas, energy, and tourism
In 2011, Qatar was announced as the host country for the World Cup in 2022. This will provide interesting business opportunities for Scottish organisations. This will be SCDI’s 9th visit to the UAE, and 3rd visit to Qatar.
Previous trade participants have come from a variety of sectors including, education and training, manufacturing, IT software development, oil and gas, and website usability.
