City hotels

The strength of the business and leisure tourism markets in Scotland’s cities drives year round occupancy and high room rates.

Demand for additional accommodation – particulary 4-star and above, presents significant opportunities for accommodation providers, developers and investors.

City hotel opportunities:

  • 4,000 more rooms are required in Edinburgh by 2015 (2,000 at four star or above) and 3,000 more in Glasgow in the next decade
  • Edinburgh is the second most visited UK city by overseas tourists. In 2008 these visitors stayed for 7.54 million nights and spent £436 million.
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow are ranked second and third in the number of International Association meetings held in UK
  • The disposable income of Stirling households is 10 percent higher than for Scotland as a whole. The 120,000 square metres of retail space in the city centre provides potential for a regional shopping hub.
  • Passenger numbers at Aberdeen Airport have increased by 34 percent over the past decade making it the fastest growing of BAA’s six UK airports
