Global competition for renewable energy prize

Date: 03 Nov 2008

The world's largest prize for marine renewable energy innovation is being launched on 2 December.

The £10 million Saltire Prize, which is open to Scottish-based teams and the international research and innovation community, is designed to unleash the tremendous potential of marine renewables.

The Saltire Prize is already attracting a great deal of interest even before the full details are announced in December. One criteria is that entries will have to involve technology that both suits the Scottish natural environment and reflects the existing expertise of the workforce in Scotland.

Additionally, entries need to be of benefit to the Scottish economy and use technology which is achievable within the short to medium term of 2-5 years.

In particular, this is likely to mean a project in the wind, wave or tidal power arena and further strengthen Scotland's expertise in marine renewable energy technology.

With 16 per cent of the country’s electricity already generated by renewables, the Saltire Prize capitalises on Scotland’s position as a world-leader in alternative energy.

The Scottish Government backed prize aims to attract scientists in the same way that the $10 million Ansari X Prize inspired the race to launch the first private spacecraft, SpaceShipOne in 2004.

Full details of the Saltire Prize will be revealed on 2 December 2008.
